Making the Most of Your Dental Insurance: 3 Helpful Tips

Dental insurance can be a helpful tool that can reduce your out-of-pocket costs for dental treatment. However, many people don't understand how their benefits work or how to make the most of them. So, today, we're providing some helpful tips.

#1 Visit Your Dentist for Preventive Teeth Cleanings and Checkups

Visiting your dentist every six months for teeth cleanings and exams is one of the best ways to protect your dental health, beautiful smile, and budget. Because when you're consistent about these dental visits, we can detect problems like tooth decay, gum disease, and cavities early when they're easier to treat.

Better yet, your dental insurance typically covers your preventive teeth cleanings, which means that most, if not all, of your out-of-pocket expenses are taken care of.

#2 Be Proactive About Completing the Dental Work You Need

If your Jacksonville Beach dentist detects early tooth decay during your preventive visit, you can typically treat it with a simple dental filling that your insurance will cover a percentage of. However, if that tooth decay is left undetected or untreated, it will get worse. It could eventually result in a painful tooth infection that requires a more invasive treatment, like a root canal, to preserve your tooth.

#3 Strategize Your Treatment

Understanding how your benefits work will help you strategize your treatment needs. Most plans run on a calendar year with a yearly maximum. That means you have a certain amount of benefit dollars your plan will pay each year that begins in January and ends in December. If you don't use those dollars by December, you lose them. Unfortunately, they don't roll into next year's benefits.

To make the most of your benefit dollars, use your dental benefits before the end of the year.
