How Tooth Cavities Develop

There are numerous reasons why you might get a cavity, but it often comes down to a lack of adequate oral hygiene and the types of foods you eat.

Brushing at least twice a day and flossing once are crucial if you want to avoid cavities. And the quality of your oral hygiene goes hand in hand with the types of foods you eat.

When you brush and floss properly and consistently, you are well on your way to a cavity-free smile. However, you also have to think about the types of foods you consume.

In a nutshell, the process for cavity formation goes like this: bacteria-filled plaque sits on your teeth between brushings. The sugary foods and carbs you eat interact with bacteria in your mouth and create acid that eats away at tooth enamel and creates a cavity.

There are also risk factors for cavities like dry mouth, the medications you take, medical conditions, and genetics. It’s always best to discuss these risks with your dentist or hygienist, who can explain steps you can take to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Why We Choose Tooth-Colored Fillings

Because we know the look of your smile is as important to you as your oral health. One of the reasons Dr. Doan chooses tooth-colored composite resin is that it doesn’t leave a dark spot in your smile as metal fillings do.

Composite resin has a translucent appearance similar to tooth enamel. When we custom-shade the material, and our dentist expertly molds it on your tooth, the result is a natural-looking repair that blends seamlessly into your smile.

Our white tooth fillings also help preserve more of your tooth because we only remove the decayed portion, then bond the filling directly to the healthy tooth structure.

Four Steps to Avoid Cavities

  1. Brush thoroughly at least twice a day
  2. Floss once a day and as needed after meals
  3. Avoid or eliminate sugary, starchy foods that promote tooth decay
  4. Visit your dental hygienist every six months for teeth cleanings

Our dental hygienist is passionate about helping you keep your teeth and gums healthy. She is an invaluable resource for tips and information that make it easy to fit excellent oral hygiene into your lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tooth-colored fillings, also called “composite resin fillings” or "white fillings,” are made from a blend of durable ceramic and plastics. This composite resin material imitates natural tooth enamel in shade and translucency, making them the ideal option for those who desire a more natural-looking smile.

Composite fillings are a welcome alternative to metal and silver amalgam fillings because they seamlessly blend in with a person's natural smile. Tooth-colored fillings are durable and resistant to fractures in small or midsize fillings. They also withstand moderate pressure from consistent chewing forces, and your dentist can place them on the back or front teeth.

The process of placing a composite filling is quick and painless. We offer a local anesthetic to numb any pain, remove unhealthy tissue from the tooth, and apply and harden the composite resin to the tooth in layers for maximum strength. Finally, we polish and reshape the tooth to ensure a perfect result.
